apibrėžtis Inžinierius, kuris tiria ir pataria sprendžiant technines naftos ir gamtinių dujų gavybos problemas. Jis parengia, organizuoja ir prižiūri naftos ir gamtinių dujų gavybą, laikymą, pradinį apdorojimą ir transportavimą. Atlieka tyrimus, skirtus naujiems ir tobulesniems naftos ir gamtinių dujų gavybos metodams sukurti. Pataria savo darbdaviui, bendradarbiams arba klientams klausimais, susijusiais su naftos ir gamtinių dujų gavyba. Išnagrinėja geologinių ir geofizikinių paieškų duomenis, konsultuoja geologus, geofizikus ir inžinierius mechanikus, nustato gręžinio vietą ir gręžimo bokšto ir kitokios reikiamos įrangos tipą. Parengia, organizuoja ir prižiūri gręžimo operacijas, peržiūri zondavimo duomenis, siekdamas nustatyti slėgį, temperatūrą ir kitokius gręžimo parametrus. Sukuria metodus, užtikrinančius efektyvų gręžinių eksploatavimą, prižiūri eksploatuojamų gręžinių, su jais sujungtų rezervuarų ir vamzdynų įrenginių veikimą ir techninę priežiūrą. Tvarko atliekamų operacijų žurnalą, registruoja kiekvieno gręžinio produkciją ir užrašo kitokią informaciją. Gali atlikti geologines ir geofizikines paieškas naftos arba gamtinių dujų telkiniams aptikti ir jų didumui nustatyti.
